How to manage your contacts

You can add new contacts and share, edit, or delete your existing contacts in WhatsApp.
Add contact
You can add a contact with a new chat, save someone’s number from a chat, or add contacts from a group.
If you have contact permissions and WhatsApp contacts turned on, you can choose which contacts on WhatsApp sync to your phone.
To check your contact permissions, go to your phone’s Settings and tap Apps > WhatsApp > Permissions > Contacts.
Add contact with a new chat
- Tap Chats > > New contact.
- Enter contact details and tap Save.
Add contact from an existing chat
- Tap Chats.
- Tap the chat with your contact.
- You will see their phone number instead of their name.
- Tap > Add to contacts > Create new contact.
- Enter their details and tap Save.
Add contact from groups
- Open the group.
- Next to one of their messages, tap their profile photo.
- Tap Save.
- Enter their details and tap Save.
Edit contact
- Tap the search bar and enter their name.
- Tap the contact.
- Tap > View contact >> Edit.
- Tap Save.
Note: WhatsApp users choose their own profile photo. If a contact didn't set a profile photo, you can’t add one for that contact.
- Open the individual or group chat.
- Tap > Contact.
- Select the contact.
- Tap >.
The recipient can add the contact to their address book or message them directly from the message.
Delete a contact
- Go to the Chats tab.
- Tap .
- Tap the name of the contact you’d like to delete.
- Tap the contact’s name at the top.
- Tap > Edit >> Delete.
- Note: If you’ve synced this contact to your phone, it will be deleted from WhatsApp and from your phone’s address book.
Deleting a contact won't delete the chat history you have with them. You can learn how to delete a chat in this article.
