The word astrology is derived from Jyoti which means light. The substances which give light are called Jyotishka. The sun during the day and the moon and innumerable stars seen shining in the sky during the night are all astrological signs. The science that gives knowledge about the position, speed, effect etc. of these astrologers is called astrology, and the book in which this knowledge is compiled is called astrology. The person who knows astrology is called an astrologer.
ज्योतिष शब्द की उत्पत्ति ज्योति से हुई है जिसका अर्थ है प्रकाश प्रकाश देने वाले पदार्थों को ज्योतिष्क कहा जाता है। दिन के समय सूर्य तथा रात्रि के समय जो चंद्रमा तथा असंख्य तारे आकाश में चमकते हुई दिखाई देते हैं वह सभी ज्योतिष्क है । इन ज्योतिषों की स्थिति गति प्रभाव आदि के विषय में ज्ञान देने वाली विद्या को ज्योतिष कहा जाता है, तथा जिस ग्रंथ में यह विद्या संकलित हो इसे ज्योतिष शास्त्र कहते हैं। ज्योतिष शास्त्र को जानने वाले को ज्योतिषी कहा जाता है।
