Finding that decadent lentil bolognese lasagne or tofu sandwich in Mexico City is no simple task. Just ask Mireya Ortiz Valenzuela, who became a vegan eight years ago for ethical reasons.
Tired of searching for tasty food that met her dietary needs, Mireya took matters into her own hands opening Pedalea Libre — Vegan Food, a vegan takeout food service based in Mexico City, in 2014.
Mireya’s business has grown substantially since she served her first plantain burger from her cozy kitchen — which had just enough room for a small table to prepare ingredients and a simple stove to cook her dishes. Today, Pedalea Libre — Vegan Food caters everything from special events to executive breakfast meetings all over town.
But as her clientele grew Mireya needed a one-stop service to boost efficiency and organization. So, in March 2018, she turned to the WhatsApp Business app. Mireya says the first month she used the app, it directly accounted for 160 sales. By September 2019, that figure had grown nearly threefold.
“Clients get frustrated if they don’t receive a quick response. If they don’t receive a response in five minutes, I might even end up losing the client,” she says, describing the benefits of the away messages feature. An avid organizer, Mireya also uses the labels feature to maintain neat client records — categorizing them by location and payment status.
Endorsing the efficiency of Pedalea Libre — Vegan Food’s communication, customer Adriana Fuster Avila says, “Every Monday they send out their weekly menu via WhatsApp. I know they also send it out via their social media, but often I don’t have time to look for their specific account; it’s much easier to have it arrive as a message.”
Mireya dreams of running a full-fledged vegan restaurant in Mexico City one day. With the WhatsApp Business app, she is building the loyal client base she will need to operate an in-demand eatery, day in, day out. And provide for others what she couldn’t find herself: that perfect vegan lasagne.
