"Communities ensure a safe place for members to share advice and discuss security, employment and of course, how to best advocate for their children."
- Maame
Maame Dentaa hadn’t been in Germany long when her marriage fell apart. She loaded the baby stroller with what she could carry and headed off into the unknown.
Packing up your life and moving to another country is not easy at the best of times, but at the worst of times, it can be a considerable challenge.
As she pushed her three month old baby along the road to the women’s shelter in the next town, Maame says she had never felt so alone.
“I was weeping. I felt ashamed. I didn’t know what to do, or how to get information and I worried about what kind of life my baby would have.”
Thankfully, Maame is now not only surviving, but thriving.
She runs African Moms in Deutschland, the largest and fastest growing support community for Black / African women in the German-speaking world - with over 10,000 members.
WhatsApp Communities is the perfect vehicle and Maame loves that WhatsApp groups now include more tools to manage messages and correct misinformation. It ensures a safe place for members to share advice and discuss security, employment and of course, how to best advocate for their children.
While it’s mostly a happy forum, occasionally Maame hears harrowing stories about domestic and financial abuse. Now Maame can quickly identify which groups need answers, attention, or immediate help.
“One member was left with nothing because her partner stole the government money she received to take himself on holiday. She didn’t know what to do, as she has a baby and a toddler, so she contacted us and we were able to respond immediately with food and money.”
Maame says her ultimate goal is to empower Black / African women to achieve social and economic progress and independence wherever they are and to expand the platform all over Europe.
